I'm pretty pleased with the overall grade on my patchwork essay, but I did have problems with referencing. It has even been mentioned three times in my feedback, so it's definitely something I need to work on! The other main point was that it didn't read as a coherent piece of work, but more like three separate essays. Having a friend read it through for me could have meant I picked up on this before submission, so I will definitely do that next time.
I found visiting a building to be more helpful than simply looking at a photograph, because it allows me to engage more than one of the senses. As my research into phenomenology has shown, the eyes form only part of the experience. For example, I struggled when writing about the Council House interior because I had not been allowed to go inside at all.
I have found critical thinking useful while writing the essays, reviewing my work as often & possible, while making sure I understand the information I find. Using critical thinking has helped me to be more analytical in my writing. I feel that I have learned enough about academic writing this year, acknowledging its relevance to my other modules. Some of the research I did for the patchwork essay has been useful in later projects & I have been able to reference this. As stated in Task 4, I am aware that the risks of plagiarism always outweigh the possible benefits & it's not worth it.
I really enjoy the research element of each project. It's interesting to learn about different architectural styles, building methods & materials, but I have also found it to be a great starting point for inspiration. Depending on the project, it is likely that I would consider using historical building in future designs, but it would have to be relevant.
